Juja MP William Kabogo Records Statement Over University Student's Death

Juja MP William Kabogo
Juja MP William Kabogo recorded a statement with police following unexplained death of a University of Nairobi student after she left a private party he attended.

It is alleged the MP, who was questioned by police in Parklands Police Station, had an altercation with Mercy Chepkosgei Keino in the party in Westlands area and decided to leave. It is also alleged she left escorted by his bodyguards — who have also been questioned by police. Keino’s body was later recovered from Waiyaki Way, and reportedly bore injuries. She has since been buried in Belgut where the local MP, Mr Charles Keter, and her parents are demanding investigation because they believe she did not die from a road accident.

On Sunday, it also emerged the police were also looking for owner of Mercedes Benz car witnesses claim to have seen drop the body along Waiyaki Way, Nairobi, around the time Keino went missing.

According to Gigiri divisional police boss Mr Joseck Nasio, Kabogo was summoned strictly as a witness who was in the same party Keino attended, as investigation progresses. He confirmed Kabogo conceded he was in the party at an apartment along Church Road.

Nairobi Area Provincial Criminal Investigations Officer Mr Peter Muinde also confirmed to The Standard Kabogo recorded a statement with his officers.

Muinde explained police need more time to investigate the case: "We will talk to all who have been mentioned to ensure the truth comes out," said Muinde.

Efforts to get comment from Kabogo failed, as he did not pick his usual mobile line that went unanswered. He also did not return phone messages sent to him both by KTN and The Standard team.

Nasio emphasised Kabogo and others who recorded statements are witnesses for now as investigation continues. He said Kabogo recorded his statement on Sunday at 12.45pm. The party was at a private apartment in Westlands but inside a restaurant used by residents.

Nasio also revealed police want to verify claims by some witnesses who saw Keino running towards Waiyaki Way followed by the MP’s guards but only learnt of her death the following day.

"Officers are working on the issue and we hope to unearth the truth. We will take action according to evidence that will be found," he explained.

Kabogo went to the station shortly after Keter and the parents of the Masters Degree student had been there.

Police sources revealed the officers have obtained particulars of the vehicle owner but have been unable to reach him because the telephone contacts he gave the Registrar of Motor Vehicles while registering the car are no longer in use.

The police gave The Standard the registration number of the vehicle, but the identity of the last registered owner has been withheld for legal reasons.

Drop body

Nasio revealed investigators want to talk to the registered owner of the vehicle to confirm claims by some witnesses who reported seeing the occupants of a dark Mercedes Benz car drop off a body on the highway.

"It was reported as a fatal accident but people have been coming with different versions of the incident and that is what we want to confirm by talking to all those named," Nasio told The Standard.

Kabogo’s name as a possible witness reportedly emerged after witnesses told police Keino had an exchange with him at the apartment complex to which she had been invited by friends before her death.

Statements given to police indicate Keino left the party after a heated exchange with the MP and his bodyguards. She and her friends had attended a private party on Friday June 17, 2011. According to police, Kabogo did not know the identity of the person who invited him there.

The MP admitted he was at the party where Ms Keino allegedly got intoxicated and caused chaos, and they quarrelled before his guards intervened. Keino was then allegedly escorted out of the apartment by the MP’s bodyguards and sat on the stairs at the entrance to the complex.

A few minutes later the night guard there asked the bodyguards what was going on and he was informed the woman was waiting for a taxi.

Her body was recovered in the wee hours of Saturday on the road where, police say several motorists had run over it.

Detectives concede they initially thought the death had been caused by a hit-and-run driver on the highway but were taken aback when they did not see much blood at the scene.

At least one person dies daily on the highway. Most of them are pedestrians who try to cross the busy road amidst heavy and speeding traffic.

A relative of Ms Keino, Mr Azaria Soi told The Standard the student’s family believe she did not die as a result of a road accident.

"I am in Nakuru from the funeral and I can tell you the family wants justice in this case," said Soi.

Ms Keino who was buried on Friday was pursuing a Masters Degree at University of Nairobi’s School of Journalism and was engaged to her fiancÈ Ronny Kemboi who works with Kenya Revenue Authority. They planned to wed in December.

Jack Wilshere places a tender hand on his pregnant girlfriend's tum as they enjoy a sunshine break.

The midfielder, 19, and Lauren Neal, 22, looked more in love than ever after getting back together just last week following a split.
They broke up in January before Lauren realised she was pregnant - after a relationship that began when England star Jack was just 16.
But when they learned about the baby, Jack vowed to be a good dad and promised to be at the birth.

He wrote a message praising his dad and left a Father's Day greeting, saying without him he "wouldn't be where I am today".
The baby is due in October.

Nightmare start for Fergie

MANCHESTER UNITED were handed a nightmare start to the new Premier League season the day before yesterday.

And it could cost the champs dearly if they make their traditionally slow start to the campaign.
Luckily for Alex Ferguson's men, they were not the only ones to suffer at the hands of the fixtures computer.
Tottenham face four of their rivals for a Champions League spot in their first seven matches.
Boss Harry Redknapp admitted: "That's one of the toughest starts I've had in all my years as a manager."
And Arsenal are going to find it hard to juggle domestic and European commitments with a challenging first few weeks.
Last term, the battle for the title was a three-horse race right through to the beginning of May - and United grabbed the crown with just one game to spare.
This time things could become clearer early on, particularly as Chelsea's boss-in-waiting Guus Hiddink has been handed a gentle start to his second spell in charge.
That is in stark contrast to United, whose first nine games feature match-ups against their five closest rivals from last season.
They open at West Brom on the weekend of August 13 but then face both Tottenham and Arsenal at Old Trafford before the first international break at the end of the month.
Prem runners-up Chelsea head to the Theatre of Dreams on September 17 - and Fergie will have made a note of the middle of October.
United go to bogey ground Anfield on the 15th and a week later welcome neighbours City.
Tottenham, who open at home to Everton, arguably face an even more daunting start.
They meet both Manchester clubs before August is out - United away and City at White Hart Lane - then Liverpool head for North London on September 17.
Still the big games keep coming for them and the derby against old rivals Arsenal is scheduled to take place at the Lane on October 1.
Boss Redknapp said: "Everton are a strong side and always difficult to beat, United at Old Trafford is as tough as it gets and then City at home makes for a difficult start.
"But they are great games to look forward to, big home games especially in front of a packed White Hart Lane. They are exciting. It would be great to get off to a good start and we're looking forward to it."
Arsenal, without a trophy since 2005, also have a tricky time as they aim to nail down a Champions League group place while getting their title charge off to a flier.

They face both Liverpool and United after starting off at Newcastle - where they famously drew 4-4 last season after surrendering a four-goal lead.
October also looks tricky for Arsene Wenger's Gunners as they are handed London derbies against Spurs and Chelsea.
Liverpool will play only three of their potential title rivals before the end of October - Arsenal, Spurs and United - so will have the chance to start well.
That would be in stark contrast to last season when Roy Hodgson's team flirted with relegation before Kenny Dalglish turned their fortunes around following his appointment in January.
The Kop kings entertain Sunderland followed by a crunch clash away to Arsenal.
And skipper Steven Gerrard said: "It's important to hit the ground running if you want to compete for the title. You can't afford any slip-ups early on.
"It's a tough first two games but I'm really looking forward to them and I think we can get two positive results.
"But it's a massive test early on. Hopefully we will have a few new signings in and can start the season with three points.
"That would give us the confidence to then go and get a good result at Arsenal. That's a difficult place to go and we haven't won there for a while."
Roberto Mancini's Manchester City - who finished third in May and will fancy a title tilt this time around - face top-six opposition just twice in the first three months.
But City will be dismayed to see they have been handed away fixtures after EVERY one of their Champions League group ties.
Chelsea can be quite pleased with their opening 10 fixtures. They face a repeat of last season's title showdown with United on September 17 but their next big game is not until the end of October against Arsenal.

Chelsea close in on Villas-Boas

LONDON CALLING ... Andre Villas-Boas
LONDON CALLING ... Andre Villas-Boas
ANDRE VILLAS-BOAS was in London last night sorting out the final details of his switch to Chelsea.

Blues owner Roman Abramovich paid a record £13.25million to release Villas-Boas from his job as Porto boss.
A Chelsea statement said: "We note the release clause of Andre Villas-Boas has been activated.
"We can confirm our interest in him and hope to reach agreement with him on personal terms and make a further announcement in the near future."
It emerged last night that Villas-Boas met with Abramovich last weekend.
At that point a basic agreement for the Portuguese to take over at Stamford Bridge was put in place.
Villas-Boas, 33, quit Porto by fax yesterday and once the compensation had been paid the way was clear for him to become Red Rom's eighth boss since he bought Chelsea in 2004.
Villas-Boas, who succeeds Carlo Ancelotti at the Bridge, won FOUR trophies in his one season as Porto boss.
Club officials were unhappy that their manager had quit by fax.
And they will be even more grumpy if Villas-Boas returns to poach their star players. Colombian striker Falcao, rated at £26.5m, is a prime target.
Villas-Boas would also like £35m-rated Portuguese midfielder Moutinho.
But hitman Hulk may be beyond even Red Rom's budget - the buyout clause in his contract is a staggering £91m!
Porto have already appointed assistant boss Vitor Pereira as their new manager.

Barca pres: Cesc pushing for move

CESC APPEAL ... but Barca won't pay over the odds for Fabregas
CESC APPEAL ... but Barca won't pay over the odds for Fabregas

CESC FABREGAS is putting pressure on Arsenal to let him go for less than £35.5million - according to Barcelona's president.

Sandro Rosell claims the Gunners skipper is doing all he can to get the Londoners to accept an offer.
And the Catalans' president insisted they will not be held to ransom as they chase the midfielder, 24.
Rosell said: "Cesc is doing everything he can to come. Pep Guardiola knows the value of players and for Cesc it is less than £35.5m.
"Barcelona will offer less and if they don't accept he won't come."
Barca are £450m in debt and most of boss Pep Guardiola's £40m summer warchest will be spent on nabbing Chilean winger Alexis Sanchez from Udinese.
So Fabregas will have to wait for Barca to sell players before they have enough cash to buy him.

Brutal teens' luxury home

SOME of Britain's most dangerous young criminals — including killers and rapists — are moving into a new £14million "jail" kitted out like a four-star hotel.

The 38 teenage offenders will enjoy a gym with rowing and cycling machines and weight-lifting gear.
Then there's the indoor heated pool and a sports hall with a court for basketball or five-a-side football.
The criminals can also play on an outdoor six-a-side pitch with all-weather surface. They will even get a JUICE BAR and relax in common rooms with comfortable sofas.

Sun user Whatthehell commented. "I am an ex-prison officer with years of experience dealing with criminals.....prison is meant to be a deterrent, how could this palace possibly qualify?"
And user theboyrichard added: "I must admit, I could quite happily live there if it wasn't full of violent yobs."
One victims' group spokesman said: "It would cost decent families thousands for all of this, but these kids will get it for free. It sends out completely the wrong message."

A source at the centre said: "No one can quite believe the degree of luxury. Schools are struggling with budget cuts but the kids who come here will want for nothing."

The centre is run by Durham County Council. Gail Hopper, head of safeguarding, said: "The youngsters cannot leave the secure unit for education or recreation and are confined to their rooms at night.
"So it's important we recreate opportunities for them to learn how they can change their lives. They will run their own juice bar — as they do in the current facility — as a commercial enterprise."

Was Nic Rigged Out Of Big Brother?

Kenyans are still in shock over the sudden eviction of Nic Wang'ondu from the Big Brother Amplified house on Sunday.
But it has emerged that if you wanted to vote for Nic from Kenya through the website, it was impossible from Wednesday last week and it was only the voting section that was down.
That may sound petty until you check at how Africa voted. Luclay and Nic both had two votes each. Nic had Kenya and Uganda voting for him while Luclay had South Africa and Botswana.
Danny was the first to go because he only had one vote from his country, Ethiopia thus making him the contestant with the least vote.
For some reason, Big Brother decided to evict two housemates and that put Nic and Luclay on the chopping block but they were tied.
For this reason a tie-breaking process was used and Luclay got 18.06% while Nic, received 12.37% and that saw the South African saved and our boy Nic evicted.
Here's how the process worked.

Karen: 6 country votes - Nigeria, Angola, Rest of Africa, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia

Kim: 4 country votes - Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Malawi

Luclay: 2 country votes - South Africa, Botswana (18.06%)

Nic: 2 country votes - Kenya, Uganda (12.37%)

Danny: 1 country vote - Ethiopia

Jackass Star Ryan Dunn Dies In Horrific Accident

Ryan Dunn, Dead at 34

Ryan Dunn, star of MTV TV and film franchise Jackass, was killed in a car crash early on Monday morning.
The 34-year-old and another passenger died at about 2.30am local time when the car they were travelling in hit a tree and burst into flames in West Goshen, Pennsylvania.
The Badly Mangled Car. Dunn was burnt beyond recognitionThe Wrecked Car....who can tell this was a Porsche?
Dunn was identified by his tattoos, according to a witness who was on the scene when the bodies were pulled from the wreckage.

The mother of Dunn’s Jackass co-star Bam Margera reportedly called a local radio station to confirm that he was killed in a car accident.
Dunn was one of the stars of Jackass, the MTV show in which he and a group including Margera and Johnny Knoxville conducted crude, ridiculous and often dangerous pranks and stunts.
COUNTDOWN: Hours before the fatal accident...Dunn, left, tweeted this picture of him and pals having a drink....He died soon afterwards.
Jackass ran for three series on MTV from 2000, followed by three movies and several spin-off shows.
And sources told TMZ that Dunn drank at least three light beers and three shots between 10.30pm and 2.10am at Barnaby’s of America bar before the accident.

Taking to Twitter soon after the news broke, 69-year-old Ebert, who won a Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, tweeted: ‘Friends don’t let jackasses drink and drive.’ A link to a news story about the incident accompanied his comment.

One tweeter, @ebertchicago, responded: ‘That was in disgustingly poor taste,’ while another added: ‘Why is this a joke? He is still a person. Have some respect.’

Celebrity gossip blogger also waded in, branding Ebert’s comments in poor taste.

An article on Perez’s blog read: ‘We certainly agree that driving after drinking is wrong, we think there’s no reason – especially RIGHT NOW – that anyone should be pointing fingers or poking fun at a truly tragic situation.

Meanwhile, Film critic Roger Ebert has caused uproar among Ryan Dunn’s fans after claiming his death was due to drink-driving.

While Dunn was charged with a DUI in 2005, police have still not confirmed if drink played a part in the crash, which also killed another, as-yet-unidentified male passenger.

Just hours before the accident, Dunn tweeted a picture of himself with two male friends, all of whom were holding what appeared to be alcoholic drinks.
Police said they found the burning wreckage of Dunn’s 2007 Porsche 911 GT3, which was capable of reaching 190mph, in the woods off the road fully engulfed in flames.
His body was so badly burnt that he had to be identified by his tattoos, NBC Philadelphia reported.
Dunn was the registered owner of the $100,00 vehicle and was driving at the time, according to police.

A male passenger was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are awaiting positive identification before releasing the passenger’s identity.
An official report states that a ‘preliminary investigation revealed that speed may have been a contributing factor to the accident.’
The Chester County Coroner was conducting an autopsy on Dunn following the crash to determine if alcohol played a role in his death, TMZ reported.
An autopsy was also being carried out on Ryan’s unidentified male passenger  – although there was no indication of when the results would be released.
It emerged today that Dunn was charged with a drink-driving offence six years ago.
Patrick Carmody, the Assistant District Attorney in Chester County, told RadarOnline that the Jackass star was charged with a DUI in 2005.
He told the website: ‘In 2005, Dunn was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and entered a first offender’s programme that allowed him to clearhis record after a certain period of good behaviour.’
Tire marks at the scene of the fatal crash show where the Porsche careened off the highway, through a metal guardrail and into the woods. Pictures from the scene show the charred remains as a tow truck had to drag the wreckage from the woods.

Yesterday Johnny Knoxville, the leader of the Jackass gang, led the tributes to his former co-star.
He took to Twitter to express his sadness over the loss, saying: ‘Today I lost my brother Ryan Dunn. My heart goes out to his family and his beloved Angie.’
He ended the post by saying: ‘RIP Ryan, I love you buddy.’

Knoxville later added: ‘Please drive safe and wear your seat belt. Ryan Dunn will be missed. God bless.’
Dunn rose to fame as part of the stunt crew for the MTV show Jackass, which ran from 2000 to 2002

Carlo snub gave Jon the Blues

RARING TO GO ... Mikel

CHELSEA midfielder John Obi Mikel is hoping the next Blues manager will show more faith in him.

He admits he grew frustrated at being snubbed by former chief Carlo Ancelotti last season.
A knee injury ruled him out for five weeks. But after recovering, Ancelotti failed to consider him for crucial matches.
Mikel, 24, said: "I had a good start to the season until about January. Then when the club had a bad run, it affected everybody. Everything went downhill.
"I was playing in every game, Champions League and Premier League, but suddenly we had this bad run which went on for about a month or two.
"I had a knee injury in the middle of it as well and was out for four or five weeks.
"When I came back, I wasn't playing regularly - just a few games. It was frustrating for me.
"It's very difficult as a young player but I've learned to deal with it.
"Every season you are going to have a period when things are not going well for you and other times when things are going well. You have to try and manage both.
"I just try to stay professional, train and forget about it. I play when I get the opportunity."
Mikel admitted Ancelotti had a reason for not selecting him for games but his exclusion merely pushed him to work all the harder.
He added: "When I'm not playing, the manager has a reason why he's not picking me.
"Everyone saw how disappointed I was when I was not being picked in the team.
"This was a period for me to keep my head down, work really hard and try to change different things.
"And all of a sudden, towards the end of the season, it was like I came back to my best again."

Samba 'wants to play for Arsenal'

BLACKBURN star Chris Samba has told the club he wants to join Arsenal.

The 27-year-old defender was linked with a switch to the Emirates Stadium in January but talks between the Gunners and Rovers broke down.
Samba then penned fresh terms at Ewood Park which will tie him to Lancashire until 2015.
But Anuradha Desai — chairperson of Rovers' owners Venkys — admitted Samba iss still keen on a move to north London.
Desai said: "We don't want to let Chris go. I'm confident that we can keep him and I hope he'll stay.
"I know he has an ambition to play for Arsenal but I hope we can keep him for another year at least and prove our own ambition."

Barca make new Cesc approach

ARSENAL chairman Peter Hill-Wood has revealed Barcelona have made another approach for Cesc Fabregas.

Gunners captain Fabregas, 24, has been linked with a switch back to his hometown club for the last three years.
Barca had a £30million bid for the Spanish World Cup winner turned down last summer, with Arsenal asking for a fee in excess of £35m.
But Hill-Wood revealed Pep Guardiola's side have been in contact to discuss a new offer for the midfield star.
Hill-Wood said: "Yes, they have spoken to us about Cesc. They have been in touch but so far they have not made a bid and we do not want to let him go.
"But he comes from Barcelona so it is understandable if he wanted to go back. However, they have not made an offer so far."
Fabregas moved to Arsenal from Barca in 2003 and has made 303 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 57 goals.

Baby,s life is also accountable

A newborn baby boy bled to death at Gulu Regional Hospital on Monday hours after a nurse on duty put him in the incubator without tying  his umbilical cord.
The baby was delivered through caesarean section at 9:00pm after its mother, Patience Adong, developed complications.
The Kid's Father, next to the body of his dead child.
Hospital staff said after the operation, Adong and the baby were moved to the maternity ward.
It is reported that the nurse on duty later took the baby to the “oxygen room,”saying it was exhausted.
However, Bonny Odongo, the bereaved father, narrated that: “The nurse left the child alone in the oxygen room. Access was restricted, but through the glass door. We could see blood all over the baby’s cotton sheets.”
Odongo said it was around 2:00am yesterday that other women in the ward noticed that the child’s umbilical cord was not tied.
“We looked around for assistance and at about 3:00am, a nurse came to the ward and started blaming us for not tying the umbilical cord of the child. In a rush, she looked around for a thread to tie the cord, but my son had already bled to death,” he said.
Lilly Okot Piloya, the head of nurses at the hospital, confirmed that the child died from the oxygen room.
Piloya said she learnt that the child’s umbilical cord was tied late, but did not confirm the time it was tied.
She, however, said the child could have died of exhaustion, saying the baby stayed long in the womb.

But last evening, Odongo claimed that his son and wife did not get adequate attention because he did not have money.
“We came to the hospital because they told us that medical services in government hospitals are free, but I was asked to pay sh10,000 a day before the operation, which I did not have,” Odongo said.
Piloya, however, said it was unlikely that anyone asked for money. “When people are angry, they say anything. I suspect the bereaved father made the accusations out of anger.”
Piloya added: “There were only two nurses on duty. One nurse was delivering women in the wards and the other was doing the rounds. So they were overwhelmed.
Unfortunately, the parents did not report that the child had started bleeding.”
Gulu resident district commissioner Chris Owor Odoi described the incident as appalling and ordered an investigation.
